Top 5 the Most Famous Ukrainian Authors

Ukrainian literature has given many brilliant names of talented writers whose intelligence and moral standards are inspiring all generations of Ukrainians. Here the list of the most known poets and novelists is presented.

1. Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861)

Taras Shevchenko, artist and poet, is one of the greatest Ukrainian authors. Becoming an orphan in his early childhood he made living being a boy-servant. His owner P. Engelhardt sent Taras to study painting because of his big talent. Once, at the age of 14 Taras was taken to St. Petersburg and was introduced to the Russian painter K. Briullov. He drew a portrait of the Russian poet Zhukovsky and sold it in a lottery to buy Taras’ freedom. So, in 1838, young painter became free and was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts.

During his education Shevchenko realized that his vocation was writing. 2 years later he published Kobzar, his first collection of patriotic poems. Shevchenko was very concerned about the state of Ukraine of that period which was reflected in his satirical poems Haidamaky, Caucasus, Dream in which he criticised the tsarist regime. In 1847, Shevchenko was arrested by order of Russian tsar Nickolas, exilled to remote fortress and forbidden to write and paint. After 10 years Shevchenko was released but prison conditions were so hard that his life lasted only 4 years. Taras Shevchenko is considered not only a gifted artist and poet but also a national bard of Ukraine, its history and independence, inspirer of democratic ideas. His poems were translated into many languages.
